Very many congratulations to Enterprise SC who are celebrating their 60th birthday this year!
From early beginnings at the Scarbrook Road Baths in 1959, the Club moved to Thornton Heath when the Central Baths closed and to Purley Swimming Pool when that opened and where they continue to meet every Friday evening from 8.00pm – 9.30pm.
All types of disabilities are catered for and every new Member starts with an Instructor on a one-to-one basis to learn safety in water. Depending on their disabilities, Members can progress through various badges until they are felt to be safe without an Instructor – although in some cases an Instructor will always be required.
The Club is affiliated to the Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy – the national body started in 1950 to teach people with disabilities to swim. H.A.S.T. organises both Regional and National Galas and swimmers are awarded timed handicaps so that they can compete on an equal basis. At the Regional Gala held at Sevenoaks in June this year, Enterprise won 3 Gold 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals and retained the Senior Shield (coming joint first with Sharks overall for the Seniors). The Gold medal winners now go on to Ebbw Vale to take part in the National Finals in October.
The Club achieved Charity status in 1987 and the Trustees and all Instructors and Helpers are entirely voluntary. The Club has always received most valuable support from the London Borough of Croydon and from the Management and Staff of Purley Swimming Pool.
With the improvement in the DLA Mobility Component and the Dial-a-Ride service, the two minibuses owned by the Club were no longer cost effective and were sold. When an occasional minibus is now needed to attend Galas and for Social activities, it is hired from Croydon Accessible Transport as and when required.
A monthly newsletter keeps Members in touch with what’s going on; swimming achievements; news of Members past and present and future events.
The Club is always looking to recruit new members to train as Instructors and to help on the Poolside and with administration so, if you are able to help, then please contact them through their website.
